Sebastian Brock, D.Phil.

Biography

Professor Sebastian Brock is one of the world’s foremost scholars of Syriac Christianity and a leading figure in the study of early Eastern Christian traditions. Educated at Cambridge, where he later served for many years as Reader in Syriac Studies, Brock has dedicated his career to uncovering and interpreting the rich theological, liturgical, and literary heritage of the Syriac-speaking churches.
His work has been instrumental in bringing the writings of early Christian authors such as St. Ephrem the Syrian and Isaac of Nineveh to wider academic and ecclesial audiences. Through numerous translations, critical editions, and scholarly studies, Brock has helped illuminate the spiritual depth, poetic theology, and historical significance of Syriac Christianity within the broader Christian tradition.
Widely respected across disciplines, Professor Brock has received numerous honors for his contributions to patristics and Eastern Christian studies. His scholarship continues to shape contemporary understanding of early Christianity, while also serving as a bridge between ancient sources and modern theological reflection.
